Romania’s Trade-in-Goods Statistics, January-May, 2020
Preliminary statistics from the Romanian National Institute of Statistics (INS) show that from January to May, 2020, Romania’s total trade in goods was €54.85 billion, down 16% year-on-year. The FOB export was €23.75 billion, down 19% year-on-year, and the CIF import was €31.09 billion, down 13.5% year-on-year.
1. Trade with EU countries
From January to May, 2020, Romania’s trade in goods with other European Union (EU) countries registered €39.8 billion, decreasing by 16.6% year-on-year and accounting for 72.6% of its total trade. Specifically, the export to other EU countries was €17.16 billion, decreasing by 20.3% and accounting for 72.2% of its total export; the import from other EU countries was €22.67 billion, decreasing by 13.5% and accounting for 72.9% of its total import.
2. Trade with non-EU countries
Romania’s trade in goods with non-EU countries registered €15.02 billion, decreasing by 14.4% year-on-year and accounting for 27.4% of its total trade. Specifically, the export to non-EU countries was €0.66 billion, decreasing by 15.6% and accounting for 27.8% of its total export; the import from non-EU countries was €8.66 billion, decreasing by 13.4% and accounting for 27.1% of its total import.
3. Trade deficit
From January to May, 2020, Romania’s trade deficit registered €7.34 billion based on its FOB export and CIF import, up 11.3% year-on-year. The trade deficit with EU countries was €5.51 billion, up 17.7%, and the trade deficit with non-EU countries was €1.83 billion, down 4.5%.
4. Trade structure
In terms of trade structure, from January to May, 2020, Romania’s main import and export products were machinery and transport equipment, as well as miscellaneous manufactured articles. Specifically:
a. FOB export by sections, January-May, 2020
Machinery and transport equipment: 46.3%;
Miscellaneous manufactured articles: 30.9%;
Food, beverages and tobacco: 10.9%;
Chemical and related products, n.e.s.: 5.2%;
Raw materials: 3.3%;
Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials: 2.9%.
b. CIF import by sections, January-May, 2020
Machinery and transport equipment: 35.2%;
Miscellaneous manufactured articles: 29.9%;
Chemical and related products, n.e.s.: 15.6%;
Food, beverages and tobacco: 10.5%;
Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials: 5.6%;
Raw materials: 2.9%.
